Mountain biker riders will have 100,000 extra reasons to visit our region thanks to a $100,000 funding investment from the Member for Monaro, John Barilaro. The money will see new riding trails constructed at Mt Gladstone (just outside of Cooma) in continued efforts to promote Cooma as a must stop location for mountain bike lovers. There are some great trail networks in Cooma, and Mt Gladstone has already come along way over the years. This is thanks to the hard work from Council staff and the mountain bike community.
Local council elections have been on the radar for some time now and come Monday, July 31 candidate nominations open. You can nominate until August 9, and to do so, you need to visit the Returning Officer’s headquarters at 88 Vale Street Cooma. As I’ve mentioned before, this election represents a unique and important time for the Snowy Monaro. I encourage you to listen carefully to what the candidates have to say about ensuring they are committed to seeing entire Snowy Monaro grow.
For those of you active on social media you’ll be aware of the term ‘keyboard warrior’. This refers to someone who hides behind the anonymity of a social media account to direct abusive and aggressive comments towards others. There is one particular account carrying the name of one of our much loved towns. Please don’t be fooled by this account as it is not a reflection on the town, its people or the region.
On Sunday, July 30 we will remember the 18 lives lost in the Thredbo landslide. Sunday will mark 20-years since this tragic moment in the region’s history. Many locals were involved in the immediate response. Their efforts will always be remembered. In the sadness of the landslide, a story of preservation and hope emerged when Stuart Diver was pulled from the rubble. Thredbo will host a commemorative flare run on Saturday and an Ecumenical Remembrance Service on Sunday.
