SHEEP carcasses riddled with grass seeds are crippling efficiencies on the kill floor at Thomas Foods International. The processor said seedy carcasses slowed down the business’s kill rate by 220 animals an hour.

The hourly slaughter rates drop from 620 to 400 when dealing with grass seeds with spear grass being the plague seeds this year, coming off the wet summer last year. The hot weather is coming and barley grass hardens quickly so producers are advised take extra care with new lambs.
