This is my final Administrator’s Column, drawing to a close my time as administrator of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council and my time in local government. Before the formation of this council, I was privileged to lead Cooma-Monaro Shire Council as its mayor since 2010. Over the years, I’ve met many wonderful people and groups who contribute so much to this great region of ours.

In my 16-months as administrator, I’d like to thank the community groups, such as the various Chambers of Commerce and Progress Associations, who’ve taken the time to meet with me. Together, we’ve been able to achieve some really positive outcomes for all the towns throughout the Snowy Monaro. The passion these volunteers have for their respective towns will hold the region in good stead for the years to come.
I’d also like to thank those who’ve offered their support to myself and council in what has been a challenging, yet rewarding period.
This council has helped deliver the Lake Wallace Dam project to the Nimmitabel community, provided unprecedented water infrastructure spending in Bombala, helped Jindabyne achieve a “true” town centre, and boosted the Cooma Saleyards.
It’s pleasing to see the number of people who took the time to have their say on the future of the Snowy Monaro at Saturday’s Council elections. As I write this, we have three candidates who’ve met the quota.
I would like to congratulate these candidates and the remaining eight who’ll take their place on the newly elected Council. It appears there’ll be a number of fresh faces, and I wish all councillors the very best.I’d like to thank the other 16 candidates who stood for election.
My time as administrator officially comes to an end on September 26 when council meets to decide who the mayor and the deputy mayor will be. This will be webcast and a great opportunity for all to watch the new council in action. All the councillors will return on Wednesday night for their first ordinary council meeting.
