The State Emergency Service has issued an extreme weather warning for the Southern and Central Ranges today (Wednesday, September 13) due to strengthening northwesterly winds
Locations which may be affected include Bowral, Braidwood, Orange, Bathurst, Katoomba, Canberra, Goulburn, Cooma, Yass, Bombala, Nimmitabel and Khancoban.
Damaging winds will average 55-65km per hour, and peak gusts will exceed 90km per hour.
Areas above 1900m can expect an average wind speed of 80km per hour, and peak gusts over 110km per hour.
The National Parks Service of NSW has recommended that any planned back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
The SES advised people to move vehicles under cover and away from trees, and secure loose items around their house and property.
The SES also reminded residents to keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines and report any falls to their energy supplier.
If residents require help due to severe weather they are advised to contact their local SES Unit on 132 500.
