On Sunday I attended the 50th anniversary of the National Parks and Wildlife Service at Yarrangobilly Caves. This is a wild and magnificent part of the country but unfortunately the caves fall just over the border into the neighbouring region of Snowy Valley.

I met Snowy Valleys Mayor James Hayes who greeted me with the best one liner I’ve heard in a while. He congratulated me on becoming mayor of the Snowy Monaro region, and promptly asked, “When are you going to fix my road?” This a question that I and my fellow councillors have heard quite a bit.
Many people are concerned about the condition of our roads. This is a huge task and our resources are limited. Our challenge as a Council is to improve on what we are doing.
We can’t put rates up and we can’t seal all the gravel roads. So with this in mind we must ask ourselves how we can deliver better services with the resources we have. We have to improve our efficiencies of operation, and the effectiveness of our work. Are we targeting the highest priority areas for attention? As a regional Council we have to find innovative ways of improving our road maintenance with the resources at our disposal. We need greater efficiencies to start occurring.
Last Friday, Deputy Mayor Lynley Miners and I met with Deputy Premier and member for Monaro John Barilaro and the federal member for Eden-Monaro Dr Mike Kelly. We discussed how all levels of government can work together to deliver better services to the region and kick-start important projects.
