Councillors met for our third Ordinary Council meeting last Thursday in Bombala. It was pleasing to see a strong turnout from the community who watched the meeting unfold.

The meeting went well into the night as we discussed and debated a wide range of items brought before Council for our consideration.
One of the meeting’s most debated items was that of the ‘moratorium on the adopted fees and charges for the disposal of waste at the Bombala and Delegate waste facilities’.
Councillors were asked to vote on whether this moratorium should cease from January 1, 2018. The vote was tight, and as mayor, I exercised my right to have the casting vote. I voted in favour of the recommendation that the moratorium ends on January 1.
I believe that we are now the one region and as a result a particular area should not be exempt from paying a fee or charge that the rest of the region pays.
This said, council agreed to establish a waste management working party comprised of councillors and staff to review the fees and charges that are currently in place. Both sides put forward well thought out reasons as to why the fees and charges should/shouldn’t apply.
The November Council Meeting also saw councillors nominate for positions on Section 355 committees. A consolidation process will be undertaken to reduce the number of advisory committees from 24 to 11 and management committees from 32 to 30.
These s355 committees play an important role in helping run and maintain the many community assets we have in the Snowy Monaro. I look forward to seeing all Councillors engage with the various committees they now sit on.
I’ve mentioned before that nominations are open for Council’s Australia Day Awards. If you haven’t nominated an individual or group yet, don’t miss out on submitting your application.
There are awards covering sport, arts and culture, community events, local business and the emergency services.
Our region is fortunate to have many wonderful volunteers, and now is our chance to recognise them.
