Many of our readers are familiar with Vern through his work with Year 9 students of the Bombala High School through the NSW RFS Secondary School Cadet Program.
Vern has also been an active member of the Cooma Rural Fire Brigade since 1983 and has served as its Deputy Captain, Secretary, Equipment Officer and President.
Member for Monaro, John Barilaro presented Vern with an award for 30 years of service at a special ceremony in Cooma last week.
“Vernon is the principle coordinator and instructor for the Monaro area RFS Secondary Schools Cadet Program,” said Mr Barilaro.
“He has trained more than 200 Cadets as well as several Cadet Coordinators.
“The Commissioner’s Commendation for Service is awarded for outstanding actions, service and leadership and fire-fighter Dunning is indeed a worthy recipient.”
The cadet course, which has been run at the Bombala High School over the past few years, provides students with basic fire knowledge and practical fire fighting skills.
“These young people would not have had the chance to undertake this program were it not for the commitment of the RFS members from the Monaro Team area who have assisted with the delivery of the program, under the direction of Vernon Dunning,” Mr Barilaro said.
