Improved transport options available through Bombala Council Community Services

BOMBALA Community Transport is a program offered by Bombala Council Community Services (BCCS). BCCS receives several different funding streams to provide transport services to residents in the Bombala Council area. Unfortunately the funding bodies do not allow us to offer these services to Currawarna residents.

1) Transport for the frail aged, people with disabilities and their carers

We receive funding from Transport for NSW to provide transport for people that are frail aged, have a permanent disability and their carers. People can utilise this service for many purposes whether it be to see a GP or specialist, shopping and access and social and recreational purposes. This is often individualised transport and provides you with a booked driver and car to provide door to door transport and assistance at your destination if required. Bombala Community Transport can provide transport to access facilities including but not limited to the following locations; Canberra, Bega, Pambula, Merimbula, Cooma, Bombala and Delegate. A copy of the current timetable can be found at or by phoning 6458 4620.

2) Health related transport (non-emergency)

The NSW Health Patient Transport Unit provides funding to Bombala Community Transport to provide non-emergency health related transport. This funding is used to assist people to get to specialists appointments and medical facilities generally in Canberra but also to other locations such as Cooma, Pambula, Merimbula and Bega. If you have a medical appointment and have no means of getting there please ring the office to further discuss your requirements.

NSW Health also administer the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) which is a subsidy program that provides financial assistance with travel and accommodation costs to access specialist treatment that is not available locally.

Patients providing their own transport and travelling at least 100km each way, or at least 200km per week cumulative distance, are eligible to apply for IPTAAS subsidies. Subsidies may include:-

• 19 cents per km fuel subsidy

• Commercial accommodation - $43/night or double room$60/ night

• Private accommodation (staying with friends or family) $20/night

• Reimbursement for economy class tickets on public transport, less GST

• Assistance with the cost of taxi fares and/or airfares

• Subsidies for an escort/carer to travel with patients

3) Funding for transport disadvantage

Recurrent funding is also received from Transport for NSW to address transport disadvantage and eligibility criteria includes people who:

1. Have a mobility disability that prevents people using conventional transport systems;

2. Live in a more remote area of NSW without access to or where conventional private/public transport options are unavailable or very limited;

3. Need to use community facilities/resources that are not available during conventional public transport operating hours;

4. Live with a permanent or temporary disability that prevents their use of conventional transport.

The Bombala Council area is generally considered transport disadvantaged and therefore all residents that live independently in the community can access transport through Bombala Community Transport should existing public transport services not meet their needs.

4) Monaro Transconnect

Monaro Transconnect is a five day per week service visiting localities in the ACT including Westfield Woden Plaza, the Canberra Hospital, John James Hospital, Jolimont Centre and the Canberra Airport. Residents in the Bombala Council area are encouraged to enquire about this service and people can be picked up from designated places in Delegate, Bombala and Bibbenluke. Bombala passengers are transported to Cooma by Bombala Community Transport and then meet with Snowy River Community Transport (who bring residents in from Jindabyne and  Berridale) and continue to Canberra with that service. To book on this service residents are asked to book before 2pm prior to the required date of travel. Bookings will be taken from Monday to Friday.

A registration process must be completed to access these various types of transport by phoning 6458 4620. All our funded transport is provided on the basis of priority of need and resource availability at the time.
