A contractor digging holes for new storage sheds being constructed at the back of Foodworks accidentally severed the line.
Fire and Rescue NSW 230 Bombala station commander Terry Lomas said Fire and Rescue was called to all gas leaks.
Commander Lomas said the laneway was closed in both directions of the work site and the situation was closely monitored.
Platypus Crash Repairs and Garden Gadgets were told to close down welding equipment during the incident, for fear of an explosion.
Commander Lomas said the road was closed while they waited for a plumber to arrive from Cooma to repair the ruptured line.
