“It was brilliant,” Senior Constable Campbell told the Bombala Times yesterday morning.
“There were no dramas from our end.”
Hundreds of drivers were pulled over for random breath tests across the three days of Operation Stay Alert.
“I did hundreds, and no, there was nothing to report,” he said.
L-Plate driver Aimee Badewitz, of Bombala, was one of the many drivers to be breath-tested.
Aimee, 16, who got her L-plates in March, was clocking up some hours with her mum Rocky on the road near the oval in Bombala when they were pulled over.
“It was the first time she had been breath-tested, she handled the experience very well,” Mrs Badewitz said.
Mrs Badewitz praised the police for their high visibility presence over the weekend, adding that she believed it was a deterrent to bad driving behaviour.
Senior Constable Campbell said he hoped road safety messages – including those on drinking, speeding and driving while tired – were having a positive impact on drivers’ behaviour.
But he also suspects that a lack of snow for the start of the ski season had something to do with the incident-free holiday weekend.
“It’s usually a mad-house up here on the long weekend,” Senior Constable Campbell said.
“But there was no snow and no idiots around.”
