Any floodlights at the relocated Croom Road Sporting Complex could also pose a problem.
This information forms part of the bypass’ preferred infrastructure report, released this week.
The aviation assessment considers the Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS), which looks at structures within a predetermined area that could affect a plane’s flight path to and from the airport.
The assessment stated the bypass would be built “in close proximity to the Illawarra Regional Airport”.
In the case of the east-west runaway, part of it was so close as to make street lights a problem.
“A section of the southbound exit ramp [to Albion Park] would have less than 10m clearance from the road surface to the OLS,” the assessment stated.
This section would not be able to include standard street lights as the clearance at some points would be just 6.3 metres.
“If street lighting is required in this area lower than standard height street light poles may be necessary,” the assessment stated.
In addition, the construction phase of this area of the bypass could affect airport use.
The assessment also noted potential problems could be caused if floodlights were installed at Croome Road.
“It is noted that floodlighting to the proposed netball practice courts and AFL oval is not proposed in the design information assessed,” it stated.
“Due to the ground level at these facilities and their location within the OLS take-off climb and approach surfaces, the installation of floodlights for these facilities would intrude significantly into the OLS and have an impact on aircraft operations.”
The preferred infrastructure report is on exhibition for public comment until September 25.
