The upstream and downstream footbridges are now open, and in a further boost to the town, the Platypus Viewing Platform is set to be unveiled on Thursday.
The Platypus Viewing Platform will give locals and tourists a greater chance of spotting one of Australia’s most iconic and loved animals, the Platypus.
“It’s very exciting for the Bombala region to have these projects ready for public use. The Platypus Viewing Platform will be an icon for Bombala and I expect it will attract visitors to the town,” Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor, John Rooney said.
The Snowy Monaro is regarded as the Platypus capital of Australia, and with the completion of the platform, Bombala will be home to one of the region’s leading tourist attractions.
“There will be further work taking place in the Bombala region with community infrastructure projects planned under the Stronger Communities Fund Major Projects Program.”
Additional work is required to the Platypus Viewing Platform with hand rails, pedestrian fencing and rock work to be completed. A significant downpour at the end of October created a slight delay for the project team.
Locals are already making use of the two footbridges. The downstream footbridge has some minor work to be completed with landscaping work scheduled to commence once the ground dries up.
The three projects are part of a suite of infrastructure projects delivered by Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
