Junior Drivers 14-17 years, ‘Come and Try’, classics, fast cars including 1950s-1960s classic cars and up-to-the-minute All Wheel Drive (AWD) cars and HSV V8s.
The weekend kicks off at 9am on Saturday morning with untimed runs with instructor for junior (14-17) drivers who are taking part in Cooma Car Club’s 2017 Junior Driver Development Program.
‘Come and try’ timed runs for drivers 16+ without any previous motorsport experience who would like to ‘have a go’ in controlled conditions (with an instructor if required).
The junior driver training program is being held in conjunction with CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sports).
During October nine young drivers had a great day learning about car maintenance and basic car control in the Car Club’s Motorkhana/Training Day at Cooma.
Saturday’s hill climb will enable them to develop their skills further, by experiencing car control at higher speeds in a safe controlled environment, with an instructor in the car until they feel confident enough to have a solo run.
In the afternoon, the meet will take on an historical feel when drivers of Classic (1987 or older) cars take to the track.
Nevertheless, this is unlikely to be a staid exhibition of older cars taking a leisurely trip up the hill climb track.
Last year this event included Anthony Hyde from Canberra in a very fast Volvo 240 GT turbo, Rogan Corbett in a Chrysler Charger, Tony and Dan Matthews sharing a fast and tidy handling Ford Escort and Nick Besestri driving a Fiat 124 Coupe AC.
The regular hill climb with an anticipated 40 entries is on Sunday
Cars will range from a very fast high grip AWD models such as Mitsubishi Lancer Evos, Subaru Impreza WRXs, and the HILL record holder at 39.56s, Reece MacIntosh from Canberra in his Volkswagon Golf R.
The organisers are also anticipating that Zac Le Lievre will once again take up the challenge in his fantastic 1.5 litre Westfield Megabusa Clubman.
Zac has a best time in this car of 39.79s. Sunday’s hill climb is open to vehicles ranging from road registerable Type 1-2 2WD production vehicles up to Type 3 AWD vehicles, and Type 4 production based 2WD vehicles (sports sedans).
All the entrants can anticipate a minimum of 4 x 1 km runs.
The events are held under CAMS rules and regulations. Saturday afternoon’s and Sunday’s competitors must hold a CAMS Level 2 Speed Event Licence.
Entries are open until Friday, November 24. Entry forms and further details are available at www.coomacarclub.com.au/hillclimb/
Spectators can arrive at any time as a courtesy shuttle bus will run all day. There is no charge for spectators.
