The public meeting was convened by Bombala’s Alison Gimbert who was impressed with the number of people that attended.
People also brought along some samples of Bombala’s filthy water, some of which were totally putrid, with the worst sample by far coming from the Currawarna Residential Aged Care Facility in Bombala.
Mayor John Rooney took centre stage for the meeting telling people that council would deliver potable water to the community of Delegate in the next 12 to 18 months.
The mayor then went on to explain council’s future plans for trying to rectify the dirty water which included replacing the more than 60-year-old Bombala water pipes before the Member for the Monaro and Deputy Premier of NSW, John Barilaro spoke.
Mr Barilaro told the meeting he had visited the Bombala Water Treatment works that day.
“The Bombala Water Treatment plant has passed its use by date and the government will allocate $15million out of the reserve fund towards resolving the problems,” he said.
Council now needs to make plans and submit proposals to the state government to get that money.
Councillor Anne Maslin told the meeting that council water employees were “saints” considering how old the facility was.
“We need a new water facility and we need to look at a different water source,” she said.
Convener Alison Gimbert told the meeting that they would be calling another meeting in about seven weeks’ time in order to get a report from council about how far it had progressed on applying for the state government funding and an update on water works.
“We need to keep pushing before the next election or we’ll lose the money.”
