Snowy Monaro Regional Council met on Thursday night in Berridale and Bombala and Delegate’s water supply was on the agenda.
There was not a lot of discussion about Bombala’s water but the $15M put aside by the state government was endorsed.
It was resolved that in the light of the offer from Deputy Premier John Barilaro of $15 Million for delivering clean water to Bombala and Delegate, that council staff prepare a business case proposal for the works associated with achieving the project.
It was further resolved that a strategy be devised as a matter of urgency to ensure clean drinking water be delivered to Bombala and Delegate until such time as a long term solution could be identified and that council recognises the long suffering communities of this issue.
Councillor Sue Haslingden said that councillors at the meeting had put forward having an extraordinary meeting of council about the water issue.
“But now that council are meeting twice a month, the water issue will be kept alive at each meeting until its resolved.
“It is the community standing together, that has enabled this to happen.
“It’s totally unsustainable to not have clean drinking water in the 21st century,” she said.
On Saturday, the Member for the Monaro and Deputy Premier of New South Wales told the Bombala Times that the state government were waiting for Snowy Monaro Regional Council to prepare a business case to present to Mr Barilaro that outlined how the $15 million could be allocated.
Mr Barilaro said once the business case had been presented to the government, they would then be able to help with the planning and project management to oversee the plan.
In the meantime Snowy Monaro Regional Council have advertised for a Water and Wastewater Technical Officer’s position that will be based in Bombala.
