The result for the day was a 26-all draw.
Bombala Blue Heeler Rugby League Club president, Colin Ryan said: “For the first game of the year I suppose you can allow for a few mistakes and I think that’s what bought us down.
“With new players coming into the team, it will take a little time to get the team working well together.
“It was the silly little mistakes that cost us in the end,” he said.
Early pressure on the Heelers and an error from kick off allowed the Sharks to score in the first minutes.
Bombala hit back with a great offload from Brett Hodak to Paul Perkins who went over the line to put Bombala on the board. The conversion was waved away and the score four all.
Moruya followed with two quick tries but it wasn’t long before Bombala hit back with a great try to Boro Navori. With another unsuccessful conversion the score was 14 to 8 with only minutes left until half time.
On the stroke of half time Bombala found themselves in a good field position and after a fifth tackle kick, Murray Jackson was able to regain possession of the ball to offload to Wame Belolevu who scored under the posts. Wame converted his own try and the two teams headed to the shed at halftime 14 all.
Bombala started the second half, how they finished the first and on the back of some great defence they were able to force a Moruya error.
Off the back of this defence Bombala were able to take the lead for the first time in the game through a great try to speedster Alex Rosten who ran away with the ball, putting it over the line. Wame Belolevu was able to convert and the Bombala Blue Heelers took the lead 20 to 14.
A few sets later and a great show and go from Tyler Jones, Bombala extended their lead to 26 to 14 after another successful conversion.
With 20 minutes of play left, Bombala had to dig deep in defence. Despite their solid efforts in defence, the Sharks weren’t going to let the game slip out of their grip.
Mourya’s Sammy Howlett scored, bringing the score to Moruya 18 and Bombala 26 and with 11 minutes to go the try was converted.
A good run by Moruya’s Dennis Green saw Moruya’s score 24 to Bombala’s 26. Patrick McMahon converted the try in the last few minutes and when the final siren went the game was a draw 26 all.
Boro Navori was named Players Player and received three points for his elusive running and solid defensive game. Two points were awarded to Kurt Lomas and one point was shared between Michael Wykes and Alex Rosten.
Coach, Paul Perkins awarded a coaches award to Elvis Toohey for his impressive defence.
