After attending Rotary’s International Women’s Day Event last month, Ms Taylor was inspired by key note speaker Libby Weir.
At the Women’s Day event, Ms Weir shared the story of her work in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in KwaZulu, South Africa where she volunteers in local communities for three months each year.
Ms Taylor was enlightened after seeing a photo in Ms Weirs presentation of African children wearing brightly coloured beanies. Members of the public had knitted the thoughtful gifts for Ms Weir to deliver. Ms Taylor knew she had found a new project to support.
As soon as she got home from the luncheon she pulled out her knitting loom and got to work. In a few short weeks she knitted 20 beanies for Ms Weir to take to Africa next month.
Ms Weir was all smiles as she met Ms Taylor to collect the beanies.
“The beanies are just perfect – Margaret has picked such beautiful bright colours and they will be a big hit with young and old alike,” Ms Weir said.
Ms Taylor is very excited and proud to be able to make such a contribution.
“I’ve been enjoying knitting these beanies. I like making things for the children overseas,” she said.
Ms Weir commented that the children that she works with in South Africa rarely receive gifts, and Ms Taylor’s beanies will bring big smiles to the people lucky enough to receive them.
In the meantime, Ms Taylor continues to knit and is looking to expand her repertoire to include scarves and teddies.
