The Delegate Hotel publican is the coach pictured and this week rattled off the names of his under 8s players, having no trouble recalling them all “about 34 years” on.
The youngsters pictured are (back, from left) John Jeffreys, Ben Peden, Trent Tonissen, Will Jeffreys, (front) Peter Stephenson, Ryan Clear, Jordan Cameron, Luke Payton and Jay Nichol.
Mr Payton thought, given the ages of some of the men he still knows and that it was likely his Delegate under 8s, he estimated the photo as being taken in 1984.
“They must’ve won the comp that year,” he said, remembering the under 10s weren’t as successful that same season.
Mr Peyton remembered a quality bunch of players.
“Of that side John and Will went on to play first grade for Shore [Sydney Church of England Grammar School].
“Luke played firsts for Joeys and then got a scholarship to play in Japan.
“It was a strong team.”
