The Blue Heelers hosted their Women in League and Heritage Round on Saturday. With a packed day of footy right through from juniors to seniors, it was a great day for the Bombala clubs.

League Tag
First to take the field were the High Heelers who played the Eden Tigerettes in their first of two games for the day.
As a top of the table clash, the Bombala girls knew the had to dig deep and grind it out to get the win.
The game started well for Bombala getting their first points after just five minutes through Abbey Kimber (sponsored by Monique Perkins Accredited Practicing Dietitian) and with the conversion waved away in the wind, the score was 4-0 in the home side’s favour.
Just three minutes later, Bombala were in again with another great try to Abbey Kimber (sponsored by Monique Perkins Accredited Practicing Dietitian) and with another unsuccessful conversion, the girls were now leading 8-0 and this is how the first half would end.
The second half started with solid defence from both teams, neither being able to break the line. This changed in the 12th when Eden found a gap and were able to score their first points through Tamika Millard and with a successful conversion the score was now 8-6 Bombala’s way.
With the game locked tightly, the Bombala girls were looking to secure the win and in the 22nd minute, captain Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) showed some great skill to evade defenders and score, leading the final score reading 12-6. It was a very solid performance from the Bombala side against an impressive Eden outfit.
The points were awarded as; player’s player Abbey Kimber (sponsored by Monique Perkins Accredited Practicing Dietitian) for creating attacking opportunities throughout the entirety of the game. Three points went to captain Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) for leading from the front and holding solid in defence, 2 points went to Abbey Kimber (sponsored by Monique Perkins Accredited Practicing Dietician) and 1 point went to Jade Crouch (sponsored by Southern Monaro Cattledogs) who is proving very hard for the opposition to handle with her strong running.
There was no time to rest for the Bombala girls who had another game playing Candelo-Bemboka Pink Panthers. This game started well for the Heelers who after only 28 seconds of play ere able to score their first points with a great individual try to the captain Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing). Kayley Keavey (sponsored by D&L High Country Earthworks) was able to convert and the score read 6-0 early in the game.
Minutes later the High Heelers were in again through Jade Crouch (sponsored by Southern Monaro Cattledogs) who timed her run perfectly to burst through CBU’s defence and score. Next to find the line was Sam Stewart (sponsored by Clear Cut Electrical) and with Kayley Keavey’s (sponsored by D&L High Country Earthworks) successful conversion the girls were now leading 16-0. Two more tries to Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) before half time and successful conversions to Kayley Keavey (sponsored by D&L High Country Earthworks) saw the Heelers round out the first half leading 28-0.
The second half started well for the Bombala girls when Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) was in again and with another successful conversion by Kayley Keavey (sponsored by D&L High Country Earthworks) the lead was now 34-0.
After another 10 minutes of play, the Bombala girls were in again this time through Heidi Kimber (sponsored by Brownlie Border Leicester Stud) taking the score to 38-0, Bombala’s way. Just minutes later Sam Stewart (sponsored by Clear Cut Electrical) found the line extending the Bombala girls lead to 42-0. With just minutes left on the clock, Abbey Kimber (sponsored by Monique Perkins Accredited Practicing Dietitian) scored another try for the home side and with a successful conversion, the score ended 48-0. It was another impressive display of football by the Bombala girls who continue to impress spectators with their attacking skills and strong defence.
Points for this game went to Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) who was awarded player’s player for her dominance across the park, 3 points went to Georgia Jones (sponsored by Bombala Garden Jewels) for her support plays and strong runs, 2 went to Kayley Keavey (sponsored by D&L High Country Earthworks) for her safety at fullback and purposeful running and 1 point went to Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing).
Reserves
The next game for the day was the reserve grade fixture where the Bombala Blue Heelers were taking on the Candelo-Bemboka Panthers. Still searching for their first win, the boys looked solid from the outset and after only one minute of play, were able to score their first points through front rower Chris Halligan taking an early lead of 4-0.
Just three minutes later, Chris Halligan was in again and with a successful conversion to Murray Jackson the score was now 10-0 in Bombala’s favour.
Unfortunately two tries to Candelo-Bemboka before half time saw the home side trailing 12-10 at the break.
After half time, Candelo-Bemboka were first to get points on the board extending their lead to 18-10. In the 19th minute, Blake Stevenson for the Blue Heelers was able to score a try and take the game to within 4 points.
Just before full time, Chris Halligan scored his third try of the day and with a successful conversion to Murray Jackson the boys were able to snatch their first victory for the season running out winners 20-18.
It was a gutsy effort from the home side who have been so close to a win week in, week out. The boys will look to build on this heading into the final rounds of the season.
Points were; player’s player Chris Halligan for his dominant attacking, 3 points went to Nick Ryan for his leadership in the halves, 2 points went to Ben Mooney who coming back from injury, injected himself into all aspects of the game and 1 point went to Tommy Eccles (sponsored by W&C Eccles) for his all round great game.
First Grade
The First Grade fixture was the Blue Heelers taking on the Merimbula-Pambula Bulldogs. Donning their limited edition heritage jerseys paying tribute to past group 16 Bombala first grade premiership winning teams, the boys were looking to get back into the winners circle.
Unfortunately the first half didn't go to plan for the home side, unable to capitalise on opportunities and off the back of some errors, Merimbula-Pambula were able to score five unanswered tries going into the half time break leading 28-0.
The Bombala boys knew they had a big job ahead of them in the second half to claw their way back into the match. Merimbula-Pambula were first to score in the second half, extending their lead to 32-0.
However minutes later, Blake Robinson (sponsored by MCH Welding) crashed over from dummy half to score the first points of the match for the home side. With a successful conversion to Wame (sponsored by DF&D Stewart), the boys were now trailing 32-6.
Next to score would be Merimbula-Pambula, who were able to extend their lead further to 40-6. With 13 minutes remaining on the clock, Bombala had a hard task ahead of them to get some more points on the board.
With some impressive ball work, the Bombala boys were over the line again this time through Adam Rodwell (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) and with a successful conversion by Andrew Guthrie (sponsored by H&D Jones) were now down 40-12.
Not long after, Boro Navori (sponsored by Bobbin Rustic Creations) showed great skill and strength to muscle his way over the line and with another successful conversion to Andrew Guthrie (sponsored by H&D Jones), the score now read 40-18, Merimbula-Pambula’s way. Unfortunately for the home side, this was the way the game would end. The boys will get to training this week and look to next week to get back into the winners circle.
The points for this game were awarded as; 3 points and player’s player, Elvis Tui (sponsored by Clear Cut Electrical) who was impressive all game for the home side creating opportunities in attack and holding solid in defence. Two points went to Wame (sponsored by DF&D Stewart) who looked dangerous with the ball in his hands, breaking the line and gaining valuable metres and 1 point went to Boro Navori (sponsored by Bobbin Rustic Creations) for his solid runs.
