The first game saw the Bombala High Heelers take on the Cooma Fillies in what was going to be a tough contest. The game started well, with solid defence from both sides, and it wasn’t until the 7th minute that High Heeler Sam Stewart (sponsored by Clear Cut Electrical) would score out wide, opening the girls account for the day. With the conversion waved away, the girls looked in good stead leading 4-0.
However, the girls were unable to capitalise further with some uncharacteristic dropped balls in their own half, meaning that they had to work hard in defence to keep the opposition at bay. The High Heelers held strong in defence, however on the stroke of half time, the Cooma Fillies were able to sneak in and score a try locking the scores at 4 all leading into the break.
The second half started similarly to the first for the Bombala girls with a try in the 6th minute to Sam Stewart (sponsored by Clear Cut Electrical) and with the conversion waved away the girls were now leading 8-0. However shortly after, the Fillies were able to hit back with a try of their own again locking the scores up at 8 all. Both sides desperately searching for more points saw some solid defence from both sides.
Unfortunately the High Heelers were unable to score any more points ending the game in an 8 all draw. It wasn’t the Heelers best game and uncharacteristic of what they have displayed for the rest of the season. The girls will get to training and work on the little things, hoping to have a good win next week in the last round game of the season and leading into finals.
Points this week were; Player’s player was shared between Maree Coates (sponsored by Southern Stockyards and Fencing) for her impressive defensive efforts and Kayley Keavey (sponsored by D&L High Country Earthworks) for her strong running of the ball and superb one on one tags.
Three points were awarded to Maree Coates, 2 points to Kayley Keavey and 1 point to Abbey Kimber (sponsored by Monique Perkins Accredited Practicing Dietician) for creating attacking opportunities all day.
Reserves
The next game of the day was between the Bombala Blue Heelers and Cooma Stallions reserve grade sides. The game didn’t start well for the Heelers with Cooma scoring 4 tries within 20 minutes of play taking an early lead of 22-0.
However it wouldn’t be long after the 20th minute that Bombala would score their first points of the day when prop Paul Gimbert crashed over and with Murray Jackson’s successful conversion the Heelers now trailed 22-6. Just before half time, Cooma scored one more try taking them into the break leading 28-6.
The second half started with Cooma opening the scoring after 5 minutes of play extending their lead to 34-6. Just minutes later though, Bombala were in again through Andrew Platts and with another successful Murray Jackson conversion, the Heelers were now trailing 34-12 with plenty of time to score more points. However this wasn’t to be and with fatigue setting in after some solid defence from the Bombala boys, Cooma were able to score another 4 tries leaving the end score reading 58-12. Like previous weeks, the score doesn’t reflect the Bombala boys hard working attitude and commitment to the game. The boys will have their last round game of the season this coming weekend, where they will look to finish the regular season on a high with a hard fought game against the Tathra Sea Eagles.
Points for this week went to; players player and 3 points, Luke Mould who tackled hard all game and ran the ball back with purpose. 2 points went to Andrew Platts for his dominance in the middle and 1 point was awarded to Paul Gimbert for his hard running and solid defence.
First Grade
The First Grade fixture was the last game to take place for the day, and with the sun going down and the frost starting to settle, it was going to be a great game of football.
The game started well for the Blue Heelers who after just 3 minutes of play were able to find the try line when half back Tyler Jones (sponsored by Raw Strength Bombala) took the ball to the line, crashing over under the posts to score. With Wame Belolevu’s (sponsored by DF&D Stewart) successful conversion the boys took an early lead of 6-0.
After some back to back sets of impressive defence from the Heelers on their line, Cooma were able to sneak through scoring a try out wide and with the conversion successful the score was now locked at 6 all.
Next to score would be the Cooma Stallions, the score now reading 12-6. However just before half time, Wame Belolevu (sponsored by DF&D Stewart) was able to take a great intercept and run the length of the field to score, but with the conversion unsuccessful, the Heelers went into the half time break trailing by 2 points, 12-10.
The second half started with Cooma getting first points on the board and extending their lead to 18-10 and with another try following shortly after, their lead was now 24-10. However, Bombala then got a roll on with another great try to Tyler Jones (sponsored by Raw Strength Bombala) and with Blake Robinson’s (sponsored by MCH Welding) successful conversion the score was now 24-16.
In the 29th minute, Blake Robinson (sponsored by MCH Welding) crashed over under the posts and with Wame Belolevu’s (sponsored by DF&D Stewart) successful conversion the score now read 24-22 with just minutes left to play. Unfortunately, the Bombala boys were unable to find the try line again leaving the final score reading 24-22.
The score didn’t reflect Bombala’s game as they played one of their best games of the season in some difficult conditions. The boys will have the bye for the last round of the regular season and will look to strengthen their game leading into the finals.
Points were awarded to; player’s player and 3 points went to Luke Ingram (sponsored by P&B Joseph) who tackled all game through the middle and ran the ball back hard. 2 points went to Tyler Jones (sponsored by Raw Strength Bombala) who looked dangerous with the ball in his hands all game and held solid in defence and 1 point went to Ben Mooney (sponsored by Bobbin Rustic Creations) who dominated in defence on the ride hand edge.
The Blue Heelers reserve and ladies sides will travel to Tathra next weekend to take on the Sea Eagles in the last round game of the season. The club invites everyone to make the trip down to support the sides and get them over the line with a win leading into the finals. The BDRLFC would also like to thank their major sponsor Club Bombala for their ongoing support.
