Just after 2pm Thursday, July 19, crews from Bombala Fire and Rescue were called to the cemetery with reports of a large grass fire and plumes of smoke.
They were soon joined by fellow crews from Rural Fire Service, NSW Forestry, the council and NPWS.
Reports were a strong easterly wind was blowing with several grass fires across a 50-100hectare area, creating a lot of smoke across the surrounding district.
No properties were in immediate threat from the fire, which was contained “but could develop into something larger”.
Firefighters were said to be conducting “an offensive operation” on the fireground, with all the various agencies liaising to coordinate an attack plan.
