Growing up in the Monaro, Platts has always had a fascination with the landscape around her. It is from this unique and largely untouched part of the Monaro.
The current exhibition focuses on the different landscapes between the picturesque environment that surrounds Canberra and the mundane urban areas of the capital.
The scenes of familiar urban landscapes and contrasts these with the natural beauty of the environment she grew up in.
She paints her interactions with everyday scenes from places she encounters and revisits her roots in the Monaro landscape.
“I'm trying to develop my own point of view, and the way I paint.
“I want to make the way I paint original kind of way of painting.
“I think my earlier stuff was definitely influenced by a lot of local artists, which was good at the time, but I want to branch out and make it my own,” Platts said.
“That has definitely been something that's changed since living in Canberra. I think having a different subject matter forces you to reassess how you paint, because you have to look at it in a different way.”
Arts sales
In another sign of the profitability and success of the local arts scene the Queanbeyan Art Society has made another big sale.
The most recent art sale out of the Queanbeyan Riverside Plaza window was bought by Columbia businessman Milciades Cadena and it will hang in his art collection in Columbia.
The Queanbeyan Art Society changes the art in the Monaro Street window every month and art sales have been excellent this year with two members Diane Alder and Barry Cranston selling their works.
Early in July Diane Alder's painting Yarralumla Creek was bought by a Queanbeyan buyer for a present for his wife who had admired when walking past the window.
The Barry Cranston work Molonglo Panning again was viewed in the ‘Window Gallery’ and Milciades Cadena liked the Aussie style of panning gold, he rang the number in the window and he was able collect the painting within the hour for its trip back to Columbia.
The next Queanbeyan Art Society exhibition at the Gallery will be the Paint Like A Master and will open on Sunday August 5 at 2pm.
This exhibition will hang for two months finishing on Saturday September 29.
Queanbeyan Art Society will stage the 11th Annual Art Show with Market for the first time in City Walk, Canberra from Saturday September 22 to Monday October 1.
