The cheers were deafening as the Bombala supporters charged on to the field as the final siren went off, celebrating the team on their grand final winning effort, breaking a 27 year drought.
Some of the fans at the football were members of the 1991 Bombala premiership side and the emotion was raw.
“Not many people get to play in a grand final and it’s just one of those occasions, that you don’t realise how good it feels until it happens,” Bombala Rugby League president Colin Ryan said.
“Captain and coach of the first grade team Paul Perkins has to be congratulated on his coaching to get the boy’s in to the grand final and win it. He would be the first local coach to do than since the ‘60s.
“He had a great day on Monday with the boys which made it a good ending to the year.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our supporters, we have a fantastic support base and they make these games.
“I would also like to thank all the people who helped out, it’s not easy have to work in the canteen when your team is playing, so a big thank you everyone that helped on the day.
“I would also like to thank all our sponsors including Terry and Fiona Lomas for bringing the team back on the bus and major sponsor Club Bombala for their support over the year.
“The ladies also had a great year. They were minor premiers and played in the grand final and that’s a pretty good year,” Ryan said.
Scott Ingram, manager of the major sponsor of the Blue Heelers Rugby League Football Club, Club Bombala, said, “it was a fantastic effort by the guys, especially after 27 years since our last first grade premiership win.”
“It’s something we’ll never forget,” Paul Perkins added.
Presentation night is Saturday, September 1, at Club Bombala.
