On Monday, the Bombala and District Chamber of Commerce Revitalisation Pilot Project was given the green light, with Member for Monaro John Barilaro announcing $250,000 from the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government for the Bombala and Delegate Small Business Package.
He said the money would go to the chamber of commerce to roll out an extensive range of programs focused on supporting existing businesses and attracting new businesses to Bombala and Delegate.
“We know that small business is the life blood of our regional and rural communities, and most importantly the engine room of both the local and state economies,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Without small businesses, the NSW economy wouldn’t be the powerhouse it is today.”
The Bombala and District Chamber of Commerce Revitalisation Pilot Project consists of a number of initiatives and programs that will support and revitalise the small business districts.
Chamber president Zoe Joseph said the chamber had worked closely with businesses to identify priorities that would make a difference.
“The focus will be on expanding the retail sectors in both locations, providing improved service and choice for the community, increasing the vibrancy of the main streets and promoting our area to those thinking of relocating,” she said.
The package includes empty shopfronts/business establishment support, stimulus for existing businesses, marketing of Bombala and district, 12-month business coaching for new and existing businesses as well as a dedicated part-time project officer.
Co-owner of Bombala Bi-Rite Peter Heward said businesses in the town were in currently in a difficult period with many closing down during the time he has been working there.
He said he personally only served an average of between 25-40 customers per day and welcomed announcement of the $250,000 from the government.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea,” Mr Heward said.
“I think it will put some pride back in the town and make people feel like the effort they put into the town will be worthwhile.
“Then it might start attracting more people back to the town.”
