Earlier this month, the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) released the crime data from July 2017 to June 2018 for the Snowy Monaro local government area.
It also included data from the previous four financial years.
In the latest period, there were 53 cases recorded of domestic violence related assault. This was down from the numbers in July 2016 to June 2017, but still higher than the previous financial years.
There were also 77 incidents of non-domestic violence related assault, which was approximately the average over the five years.
Cases of sexual assault had dropped slightly in the latest period to 22. But this was higher than the three financial years from July 2013 to June 2016.
There were 92 cases of intimidation, stalking and harassment in the last financial year. This was higher than in the other four financial years except for July 2013 to June 2014 when there were 130 cases.
From July 2017 to June 2018 there were 66 cases of thefts from motor vehicles, 53 cases of fraud and 164 cases of malicious damage to property.
When it came to dealing or trafficking drugs, two charges were laid over cocaine, five for ecstasy and four for cannabis.
On its website, BOCSAR stated it was important to note the recorded statistics for some offences did not accurately reflect the actual level of crime in the Snowy Monaro. This was because recorded incidents may be affected by other factors, including the public’s willingness to report crime.
