Sergeant Scott Blanch urged a general warning to anyone considering donating to drought relief to make sure they are dealing with a reputable person, a registered charity and to make sure they get a receipt for all donations – whether that be by a business or individual.
There have been several reports in recent days of goods believed to have been donated to drought relief call-outs in the Bega Valley being left unsolicited at homes in Nethercote and Lochiel, which police are also investigating.
These items have been passed along to the Anglican Church Merimbula, which is a registered distributor for drought relief in this region.
“Unfortunately not everyone has good intentions for drought relief and there are people who prey on the good-hearted in our community,” Sergeant Blanch said.
“Check their bona fides and always get a receipt.”
