Following a bumper winter season, we are heading for one of the busiest summer periods on record.
A year has passed since the elected Snowy Monaro Regional Council took office.
In the last 12-months, our council has been committed and focussed on improving our service delivery, and ensuring our region sets itself up for the years to come.
At our inaugural council Meeting on September 26, 2017, I was given the honour of being elected as mayor.
Some of my highlights as mayor, include:
1. In Bombala, the town’s drinking water has significantly improved through hard work and investment. The flushing of water mains, extensive cleaning of the reservoirs and ongoing maintenance has enhanced the drinking water for residents.
2. The NSW Government’s $1million announcement for a feasibility study into re-opening the rail line between Queanbeyan and Bombala, and extending the line to Canberra and Eden. This is very exciting for our region.
A rail line from the nation’s capital to the Port of Eden would boost our region’s economy. A more connected south-east region will see us fulfill our tourism and trade potential.
3. In May, Council adopted the Snowy Monaro 2040 Community Strategic Plan. This is an important, strategic document that outlines your vision for the Snowy Monaro region. The plan will guide Council’s decision making now, and into the future.
4. Council called on the community to provide feedback for the Residential Aged Care Review. Hundreds of responses were received through a survey, and at a series of public meetings.
From this, Council accepted the Residential Aged Care Report that outlined 14-key recommendations for the ongoing delivery of quality residential aged care services in our region.
The report supported calls for a residential aged care facility to be established in Jindabyne, and a purpose-designed facility catering for people with severe and challenging behaviours at Yallambee Lodge, Cooma.
The next meeting of Snowy Monaro Regional Council is on Thursday, October 4, at 5pm in Cooma.
