Leading contenders in the NSW Rally Championship are split by only a few points, with three teams who could potentially take the championship. All three crews are driving Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution rally cars, showing that these cars have what it takes to take championships, but all of them have faced challenges over the series.
Glenn Brinkman and co-driver Harvey Smith have won three events in their Evo IX, but not without drama. At the last round they managed to hang on to the win while driving with no third gear.
“We’re up against it, that’s for sure. Bathurst was a rough event so Harvey has spent a lot of time sorting out the gearbox. With that sorted it’s up to us to perform on the day,” Brinkman said. “The other teams are all pumped to take this championship too, so we’ll have to be on our game!”
Fellow series contenders, Irishman JJ Hatton and co-driver Nathan Long, are yet to win a round, but have shown consistent form to be at the top of the table. T
he pair struggled with power at Bathurst and will be hoping to have those issues sorted before this final event. The third car in the trio of outright contenders is the Evo VII of Tim Wilkins and Jim Gleeson. Although they won the first round in Oberon, they have not had the same success since.
They’ll be looking to take it to the other teams at this event.
