A field of 132 players – 133 including Aussie cricketing great Merv Hughes – took on the Pambula Merimbula Golf Course.
Merimbula police sergeant Cliff Scarlett and his happy band of helpers arranged the day, and the organisation was reportedly first class.
Well known ex-Australian cricketer Hughes was the guest of honour and kept everyone amused with anecdotes from his playing days.
The festival of Merv Hughes kicked off on Wednesday afternoon when he ran a cricket clinic for the Lumen Christi cricketers at Berrambool Oval.
On Thursday morning Hughes gave a very insightful lecture to the participants in Lumen's advanced development program, then that night Vicolo Merimbula was the venue for “A Memorable Night with Merv”.
“I must say that I don't think I have met a more genuine, giving and all-round good bloke then Merv Hughes,” Sergeant Scarlett said following the golf day and associated activities.
“It was an absolute pleasure to send some time with him and the smiles and laughter that he put on the faces of other people was great.
“Five hundred dollars was raised from auctioning the big fella with Matt Stroud, Anthony Daley, James Poso and Leon Moodie having the honour of golfing with Merv.
“After playing a few holes with Merv, Anthony was questioning the wisdom of their purchase and wanted some of his money back. Apparently for a golfer Merv makes a great cricketer,” he said.
Sergeant Scarlett said while the final fundraising amount was not yet known, he was expecting more than $20,000 to have been raised for Nardy House and the establishment of the Mick Horne Scholarship.
The inaugural recipients of the scholarship – selected by Mick’s widow Mel and son Tom – were Jesse and Sammy Holden, aka the Brothers Onfire.
They performed as part of the dinner at Vicolo along with musicians Scott and Dave. The scholarship will assist the boys in pursing their dream of careers as circus performers.
“A big thank you to Glenn Warne, Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club, Will and his team from the Glass House Restaurant all our sponsors, our volunteers, the players, my partners in crime Darren Jones and David ‘Kevin’ Oliver,” Sergeant Scarlett said.
