However, it also sparked several fires.
Far South Coast Rural Fire Service firefighters are tackling several blazes, all started by lightning strikes, Superintendent John Cullen said on Friday morning.
A bushfire at New Buildings, close to Wyndham in South East Forests National Park, has burnt out around 14ha since starting on Thursday afternoon.
Advice on the the RFSNSW Fires Near Me app indicate it is being controlled, with Mr Cullen saying they were doing well at that location with machinery on site and additional ground crews and aircraft tackling it.
However, Thursday evening’s lightning storm also started fires at nearby Orchard Rd at Rocky Hall and Letts Mountain, north-west of Pericoe.
Both are in relatively remote locations with strategies to fight those fires involving Remote Access Teams dropped in and water-bombing aircraft.
Mr Cullen said no properties were currently threatened by any of these three fires.
“The weather is being kind to us at the moment. There have been some showers on those fires this morning [Friday], lifting the humidity,” he said.
"We’re continuing to work on the Orchard Rd fire and getting Remote Access Teams into that one. The newer fire at Letts Mountain is in remote country and we’re getting intelligence in there and organising strategies to tackle these remote locations.”
It’s likely nearby residents will continue to see smoke for some time as well as aircraft.
Fires further north at Bendethra and Tuross are also being controlled by Far South Coast RFS volunteers.
