The League Tag women came away with a win against Tathra 46 to 6. The Reserves were defeated by Tathra 16 to 10 and first grade went down 54 to 22.
League Tag
Assured of a top two finish Bombala started confidently against the winless Tathra girls and they were able to spread the ball wide and scored two tries in either corner to Georgia Jones and Breeanna Hepburn.
The girls were putting on some slick plays and they looked impressive in the opening 10 minutes. The next to score was Lucy Sellers who with some light stepping was able to pierce the defence and outpace the chasers.
To their credit Tathra continued to plug away and were rewarded with a try of their own. 14 - 6. Bombala were a little disjointed for the next five minutes and captain Patrice Clear decided to show the side the way when she scored a wonderful individual just prior to the break. Half time 20 - 6
The scoring continued early in the second half with further tries to Katrina Brownlie and Karter Hampshire. Kristie Nichol was the next to score when she ran on to a well timed cut out ball from Patrice to put the ball down in the corner.
Patrice was putting on a masterclass of running football and she scored the next try from halfway and went past at least five defenders in the process. Georgia scored her second with a little show and go from 10 metres out to score under the sticks. Full time score 46 - 6.
Players player points: 1 Katrina Brownlie, 2 Georgia Jones and 3 Patrice Clear.
Reserve grade
A solid opening 10 minutes in both attack and defence allowed the Bombala Reserves to obtain good field position and Paul Gimbert was the first to score next to the posts.
There were numerous missed opportunities in the next 10 minutes before Tathra made Bombala pay when the Tathra centre brushed off five defenders to score a simple try to make the score 6 - 6. The last 15 minutes of the half was to and fro until Tathra scored a try prior to halftime from a grubber kick that bounced off defenders before being regathered. 6 - 10 at halftime.
The second half was a dour affair before feeling started to creep into the game and their were penalties conceded by both teams for illegal play.
Consistent field position was finally turned into points when the Tathra dummy half scored a simple try from close range. 6 - 14. With the game on the line captain coach James Coates as he has down when needed steadied the ship and steered Jordan Rosten over the line with a beautiful pass to give Bombala a sniff. But it was not to be and Tathra ran out victors 16 -10.
Players Player points: 1 Tom Eccles, 2 Jordan Rosten and 3 Logan Brownlie.
First Grade
Tathra were well and truly up for the contest and controlled the ball and had all the field position in the early exchanges. This was converted into points when the Tathra fullback sped past the defence to score. 0 - 6 after eight minutes.
Just when Bombala needed to control things they were throwing unnecessary passes and putting themselves under pressure. The Tathra fullback scored again when he dived over from dummy half for an easy try.
Bombala were finally able to obtain good possession and the ball went wide to Bailey Jones who stepped three defenders to muscle his way over for a good try.
From the ensuing restart Bombala made their way down the field and Digby and Jo combined to put Tyler Jones over under the sticks. 10 - 12.
Another lapse in concentration saw a kick allowed to bounce and Tathra were in again. Arm grabbing in defence was becoming an issue and an attacking raid saw Tathra in again with a penalty for an indiscretion in the act of scoring. 10 - 26.
Ben Mooney scored just prior to half time when he recovered a well placed cross field kick and held off defenders before putting the ball down over the stripe.
The second half was all one way traffic and Tathra really meant business as they went on a try scoring spree.
The only bright spot for the mountain boys was a well deserved try to hard working fullback Alex Rosten. The final score ended up a very lopsided 54 - 22 to Tathra.
Players Player points: 1 point Andrew Guthrie / Nathan Robinson, 2 points Corey Patton and 3 points Alex Rosten.
This now means that the first and reserve grade boys play sudden death semi finals at Bombala next Saturday, while the League Tag girls play a preliminary final at Tathra next Sunday.
