Aussie Hotel vs Bombala Cricket Club
Nijong Oval hosted the Aussie Hotel Cricket Club and Bombala Cricket Club, in a match where batting patience and bowling consistency where rewarded by the pitch. The AHCC won the toss and elected to bat.
Mitch Hynes and Damien Asanovski opened the Aussie innings and began to weather the new ball pair of Thornton (1-19) and Sullivan (1-9 off 7) . Haylock joined Hynes after Asanovski retired hurt, and the pair was made to toil for early runs. A full blooded Hynes drive was halted by a freak one handed catch from Bombala junior Strickland, sparking a burst from first change bowlers Adams (1-26) was and Stevenson (2-37) to quickly take a wicket each to leave the Aussie struggling at 3-22. Michael Gratwick (64) joined not out batsman Damien Porter (48) in a big hitting partnership of 91, playing over the top and along the fast outfield against the Bombala spinners.
However, the wicket of Porter, bowled by a sharp off break from Brad Tonks (5-47), led to a Bombala resurgence, as Khoury, Gratwick and Shirvington fell in quick succession. Tonks completed his 5 wicket haul and was supported by Sullivan and Stevenson who also took late wickets. The Aussie tail wagging slightly to reach a competitive total of 162 after 42 overs. The best of the batsman Porter and Gratwick, playing the Aussie back into the game with their counterattacking partnership, however Tonks 5 wicket haul left the match in the balance at the innings break.
Toby Haylock and Jacob Umback once again took the new ball for the Aussie, and where met with aggressive batting from Mark Tonks, hitting multiple boundaries before being bowled by Haylock for 34. However Bombala had made an attacking start to be 1-47 off 8, forcing the Aussie to restrict the scoring of batsman Adams and Brooks. Spinners Khoury and Asanovski began bowling in partnership and Asanovski was immediately rewarded with the wicket of Adams with his first ball. Khoury bowled patiently from the other end, and was eventually rewarded with the wicket of Brooks for 15. Asanovski then removed Pratt, out stumped by Porter, leaving Bombala in trouble at 4-61. Thornton and Brad Tonks composed themselves and began to attack anything short from the Aussie bowlers, guiding Bombala to 4-95 at drinks, still anyone's game at Nijong Oval. The Aussie returned to the field with intent and quickly took the key wicket of Tonks, bowled for 21, Hynes just removing his bail with a beautiful offspinner. The job was not yet done for the Aussie, but once Khoury dismissed Sullivan and Thornton, Bombala had slumped to 7-106, and the AHCC score of 162 seemed a long way away. T. Haylock was reintroduced and dismissed the last two Bombala batsman LBW and bowled, his figures of 3-15 indicating his return to form as Bombala fell to 106 all out. Once again the spin bowlers of the Aussie giving them the edge on the turf wicket at Nijong, with the batting of Porter and Gratwick allowing them runs to defend. Thanks to Bombala for a quality game of cricket that was in the balance until the Aussies burst of 5 wickets after drinks, and good luck in the following rounds.
