Celebrating his 22nd birthday on Wednesday, Wright took to the Melbourne bowling order to task, top-scoring for his team to aid in their four-run victory 3-190 over Melbourne's 4-186.
With Matthew Wade hammering 62 runs including 10 shots to the boundary off his first 20 balls.
However, Wright quickly caught the eye of commentators and Cricket Australia after what they reported as "playing the perfect anchor innings" to Wade before taking on the limelight himself to knock 70 runs off just 50 balls.
CA officials said it was a remarkable performance on the eve of his birthday and said Wright had now set himself up "as one to watch" in just his third Big Bash League appearance.
Wright's stint included three sixes, a series of boundaries and some impeccable shot placement.
He read the bowling incredibly well and found scoring options from sweeps, reverse sweeps and more.
His performance earned him the player of the match title.
Wright had earlier impressed, hitting his first domestic ton in the Marsh One Day Cup back in November.
That put him into the records as the second youngest Tasmanian player to score a domestic one-day ton since Tim Paine in 2006.
