Bombala played a home game against Jindabyne on Saturday with Jindy winning the toss and electing to bat. Jindy made a solid start with openers Andrews and Hunt. Bombala were guilty of missing chances with both batsmen being dropped early in their innings. Hunt was making Bombala pay, taking to the bowling and looking to press on quickly. Thornton bowled without luck in his opening spell.
The introduction of Power into the attack paid dividends for the home side when he removed Andrews (19) LBW. With the off spin of Stephenson (1/25) working from the other end the two bowlers applied the screws and runs were hard to come by. This led to downfall of Joyce (2). Jindy 2/66 at drinks. Rixon and Hunt went about consolidating the innings after drinks.
The run rate slowed with Bombala bowling consistent tight lines and lengths. As the overs ticked past the need for runs increased and this was Hunt's downfall. He was caught off the bowling of Thornton (1/16) for a fine 51. This bought Beck to the crease to partner Rixon who continued hitting the ball away and rotating the strike until he went for lofted drive only to find B Tonks in the deep and was caught for 36. Sullivan backed up that wicket taking another two in quick succession finishing with the figures of 3/45. Beck continued to attack until he was dismissed off the bowling of B Tonks who finished with the impressive figures of 2/30.
After 45 overs Jindy had a made 9/163. Bombala's innings started badly with Thornton being removed in the third over by Robinson. Brooks followed in the next over being bowled by Dawson. Bombala reeling at 2/12. Power and B Tonks went on the attack, Jindy gave nothing away and Bombala were forced to work for all their runs. They began to look comfortable at the crease until Power was run out for 11. Tonks and Sullivan saw the innings through to drinks with Bombala 3/76.
Robinson claimed the big wicket of Tonks first ball after drinks for 48, bringing another Tonks to the crease. Sullivan took the attack to the Jindy bowlers, hitting away anything short. Tonks and Sullivan put together a 60 run stand in which Sullivan bought his 50 and getting to within 12 off the winning score. Tonks played an unusual subdued innings before his knock came to an end for 19 off the bowling of Rixon. The next over Sullivan to fell to Anderson for 56. Quick wickets fell and all of a sudden Bombala were 8/155. Jindy pressed hard for the final two wickets, the pressure was on both teams and singles were hard to buy. When Newton was out LBW to Anderson, Bombala still needed a further four runs to win. Again it was Ingram who got Bombala home who was supported by newcomer Brodie at the other end. Bombala claiming a thrilling one wicket win.
Golf
It was quiet on the Bombala course on Saturday with our Pennant team travelling to Coolamatong for the first round of the Pennants. It was not a good start to the Pennant season with the Bombala team being defeated by Nimmitabel 4/1. Coolamatong defeated Delegate 3/2.
It was good to see the course looking a little greener after the rain but still needing some follow up rain.
At home a Stableford was the Event. Pepper Thompson had a great round winning with 41 pts, from Mick Brown 36 pts. It was a great contest between the two who were in the same group and Mick having a good first 9 hitting the ball long with his new clubs. On the sixth after spending some time looking for his ball only to discover he had put his drive on the green, his new putter was working well also. Pepper wasn't to be out done, straight up the middle, second shot on or close to the green. Pepper got the better of Mick on the back 9. An interesting game to watch.
Sunday was a Stroke for the Monthly Medal. Mick Brown continued with the good golf coming in the winner with 67 Nett. Balls were won by Mick, Korie Elton and Pepper Thompson 72 Nett. NTP on the 13th was not won over the weekend.
