Moruya's Casey Flynn believed he captured a meteor which lit up the sky, similar to the "green fireball" over the Pilbara - which made national headlines.
Mr Flynn was out practising astrophotography at Corunna Point when the moment occurred about 8pm.
"I was shooting a panorama and had just fired the shutter; as I was looking down, this giant flash above me caught my eye," he said.
He looked up from his camera to see the sky light up green.
"The whole sky in front of me was illuminated green while this giant fireball streaked across the sky," Mr Flynn said.
"I've seen and captured plenty of meteors before but this was by far the biggest, brightest and the only green one I've seen - it was more like an explosion."
He said the streak of light only lasted a few seconds before it burnt up into the atmosphere.
"My initial thought is that it was a meteorite, but the following day I saw footage of a similar green fireball over the skies in Pilbara, and a few people suggested it could have been the same thing," Mr Flynn said.
"But the one I saw moved a lot faster and burnt up in front of my eyes which leads me to believe it was a meteorite.
"After posting the photo to an astrophotography group on Facebook, there are people as far as Port Stephens who say they saw the same meteor - which is pretty cool!"
