Transport for NSW Regional Director Southern, Jo Parrott said strengthening work will be undertaken on the truss elements of the timber bridge crossing the Coolumbooka River on Cathcart Road, north east of Bombala, under the Bridge Rebuilding Program.
"A routine inspection in July last year uncovered severe rot and possible splitting of the top chord of the downstream trusses," Ms Parrott said.
"This important work will require significant closures of the bridge to replace the damaged trusses and when complete, it will ensure the longevity and safety of the bridge for all road users."
The bridge will be closed from Monday, March 15 between 8.45am and 3.15pm during weekdays.
The bridge will then be closed to all traffic from 8.45am Tuesday, March 23 to 3.15pm Friday, March 26, weather permitting.
The bridge will then be closed between 8.45am and 3.15pm only from Monday, March 29 to Thursday, April 1.
Traffic control will be in place from 7am to 8.45am and 3.15 to 5pm on these work days with delays up to 15 minutes before and after closure times.
All motorists must detour via Black Lake Road and the Monaro Highway and are advised to allow up to 35 minutes additional travel time.
For the three months of work to take place after this, a combination of full day bridge closures and intermittent closures of up to 30 minutes will be in place.
The community will be kept informed regarding this work as it progresses and the project is expected to be complete by mid-July.
Changed conditions including traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will also be in place on Cathcart Road during work hours for the safety of workers and road users.
Motorists are advised to follow the directions of signs and traffic control and allow additional travel time.
Transport for NSW thanks road users for their patience during this important work and will continue to update the community on the repairs to Coolumbooka River Bridge.
The single lane, six-span bridge connecting Bombala to the coast has a load limit of 42.5 tonnes.
Coolumbooka River Bridge was completed in 1892 and is one of the seven remaining McDonald timber truss road bridges in NSW.
