In a gripping battle against Cobargo/Bermagui, it seemed Bombala would actually be making its way into the semi finals, having a small 34 to 31 lead in the dying minutes of the game.
Bombala tries went to Vinni Papalii, Ross Page, Nathan Jones and Will Jeffries, while Korie Elton kicked the team’s goals.
With some claiming a timing irregularity, however, Cobargo managed to snatch the victory, scoring a try and kicking a goal moments before the final whistle blew.
This brought the end score to a disappointing 38 to 34 Cobargo/Bermagui’s way, ending the Bombala Bluetongue season for 2009.
While the Bluetongues and their home crowd were of course disappointed in the result, it has been a great season for the local side, who only reformed this year after a lengthy break.
To make the finals after only a few months of playing as a unified team is a credit to the Bluetongue boys and their training schedule, and they have been well supported by the community.
We are assured that there is plenty of interest in taking on the 2010 season, with younger members in particular keen to ensure the Bombala Bluetongues play on.
The local club would now like to offer its sincerest thanks to all sponsors and supporters who helped make the season a success, especially those who played a role in the home games, whether catering, setting up the field or manning gates.
A second game was played in Bombala following our home final on Saturday, with Bateman’s Bay defeating Narooma.
