The decision was made at Bombala Shire Council’s ordinary council meeting on August 20 after community members d complained about the tree that is harbouring European wasps.
Council’s urban works supervisor said the willow tree’s trunk was hollow and that it was showing signs of rot.
After a formal inspection the tree was rated as highly hazardous with the potential for it to drop branches.
It was considered that pruning the tree would not prolong its life or improve its appearance in the park and would continue to provide a habitat for pests like the European wasps.
Mayor Bob Stewart said that it was agreed that the tree needed to be removed but that the cost of tree removal was substantial.
“The tree does need to be removed, community members have complained about the wasps and council has acted on that,” Cr Stewart said.
“However, the cost of removing the tree was estimated at around $4000 and this is a substantial amount.
“Council will now put a tender out for the removal of the tree and see if we can manage to cut that cost,” he said.
