Club vice president Eddy Evans says the prize money is over $40,000 and with the Quintrex boat with motor and trailor, valued at $15,990, as just one of the major prizes, competitors know the stakes are high.

"We're looking forward to a good competition," Mr Evans said.

"We've had huge interest shown throughout many states of Australia, assuring us that they will come to the tournament.

Club president, Bob Wilcox, said the original idea for a fishing competition came from the Chamber of Commerce.

Debatedly one of the biggest earners for Eden, the fishing competition brings in a colossal monetary gain for the town, based on what people spend while they're here on accomodation, food, petrol, liquor, petrol, equipment and so on.

Competition festivities begin with an information night on Friday at 5.30pm in the EAFC clubhouse at Quarantine Bay. 

Guest speakers from various Eden marine organisations, including Eden Marine Rescue and Eden Water Police, will take part.

A free sausage sizzle, lucky draw prizes and giveaways is also planned.

On the last day of the competition (March 14) there will be a presentation with all prizes given out, the boat prize will be drawn and there will be a barbecue.

"We usually get a gathering of around 300-400 people," Mr Wilcox said.

The competition starts on Saturday at 6am and finishes on Saturday, March 14, at 12 noon. 

There are four sections for the competition: open division, ladies, boys under 16 years and girls under 16.

Mr Evans said there was "marlin fever out there" at the moment.

He had heard of one fisherman who caught and released 16 marlin in one day and only stopped when he ran out of tags.

Michael Mashado, of Eden Outdoor and Marine, said fishing brings many people into the town, especially at the moment because of marlin fever.

"We need to capitalise on fishing … someone puts it on Facebook and then everyone comes up," Mr Mashado said.

Many visitors from Melbourne hoping to catch marlin had come into the shop over the past few weeks, he said.
