After having beaten the Tigers in the Bay earlier in the round in a tough battle, it was expected to be an enthralling match for all involved.
From the kick off the boys did not disappoint, with a dominating first tackle made by Korie Elton and Brett Hodak the crowd knew they were in for a cracker of a game.
Barnstorming runs and skilful ball handling from the boys saw Clay Stewart (sponsored by Raw Strength & Fitness) open up the scoring for the home team with only minutes on the clock.
The defensive efforts of Joe Bobbin, Chris Anderson and Jackson Standen finally allowed the home team further possession. The boys capitalised on this and again it was Clay Stewart’s brute strength that saw him carry numerous players with him over the line to score his second of the day.
Joe Bobbin (sponsored by G.Moore Concreting) was again fantastic, leading the boys by example and bagging his own four-pointer before half time.
Batemans Bay however did not drop their heads and hit back as the Heelers’ defensive efforts opened up on their line to allow Batemans Bay to stay in the game.
Solid efforts in defence by Luke Jamieson and safe hands under the high ball from Toby Morgan saw the scores at half time all locked up at 18-18, proving to be every bit the spectacle the crowd expected.
The Heeler lads took the field after half time determined to stamp their mark on their home ground. And stamp they did - keeping the Tigers scoreless in the second half.
Brilliant ball skills by Joe Bobbin to the safe hands of Charlie Lomas (sponsored by Lowanna Properties) saw Charlie score out on the left hand wing for the Heelers.
Shaun Walcott debuting for the Heelers was impressive in the centres making strong runs, unlucky not to put his winger Digby Walcott in for a couple of tries, but was able to bag his own before full time.
Brett Hodak’s injection back into the team after injury gave the boys a notable lift, making valuable metres up the paddock, as did the runs of Andrew Anderson and Joel Cherry.
Daniel Douch (sponsored by Optus Bega) was able to display his lightening pace when hitting a hole in the defensive line to stride out for a 60m run to score under the black dot.
Malcolm Stone was brutal in attack fending off players and gaining great metres for the Heeler team. A standout great all round game in defence and attack was had by Korie Elton.
The final score ended in the Heelers favour a convincing 38-18. The Player’s Player was awarded to Clay Stewart for his direction and control across the park, 3 points went to Korie Elton (sponsored by Hair on Main) for his solid all round efforts, 2 points to Brett Hodak (sponsored by Final Touches) for providing vital go-forward and 1 point to Malcolm Stone (sponsored by Raw Strength & Fitness) injecting notable strength in his runs and in defence.
The Heelers look forward to taking on the Narooma Devils in the First Grade and the Narooma She-Devils in the Ladies League Tag this weekend on Sunday, June 28 down in Narooma.
