Council is hoping to access $1.2 million from round three of the National Stronger Regions Fund which if successful would need to be matched by $1.2 million of council funding.
The major items to be included in the funding application are the terminal upgrade including baggage handling and security screening; tourism interpretation in existing terminal space; air freight infrastructure; and car park formalisation.
Council recently received almost $1 million from the state government for the airport which is being used for a large water main and fire hydrants to ensure water is available for fire fighting if needed.
News of a further request for funds for the airport, from the state government is expected this month. If granted, it would be used for runway extensions to allow larger aircraft to take off and land in a wide range of weather conditions and with no restrictions on their take-off weights.
