The general public are invited to join us on this walk in order to help us piece together the jigsaw of the history of the heritage buildings in town
- Stuart Hood
President of the Bombala Historical Society, Stuart Hood said that they were also looking for feedback from the community as well.
“The general public are invited to join us on this walk in order to help us piece together the jigsaw of the history of the heritage buildings in town,” he said.
The walk will start at 1pm, with everyone meeting up at Paddy Lomas’s old garage before the walk begins.
“The group will walk along Maybe Street and talk about who was in the buildings going back as far as we can over the last 150 year’s,” Mr Hood said.
“We already have some photos from the past and the historical society has some records along with early copies of the Bombala Times.
“As well as that we have records from the electricity company, the Monaro County Council, from 1953 to 1993 and we can cross reference what bills went to building electricity meters.
“We have some books that go back to the 1900’s which give details of who had which lot numbers,” Mr Hood said.
Mr Hood said he had also spoken to Bombala’s Bill Wilton, who at 91 years of age still remembers people that lived on the street.
“As we walk around we are hoping that people will be able to provide us with more information and we will try and produce a fairly comprehensive picture of what’s been happening with Bombala businesses throughout the years.
“It will be a great reference for residents who are interested in finding out a bit more about the town and its ancestors,” he said.
Some of the old buildings that are Heritage Listed in Bombala include the old Olympia theatre, the School of Arts Hall and the National Bank Building.
“There used to be a beautiful two storey building where the Westpac Bank is now situated,” Mr Hood said.
“But it was torn down before the community could object and replaced with the current Westpac Bank which is about to close,” he said.
The society was founded in 1981 and is run solely by volunteers.
