It was a great day out for the Lucus family as Delegate hosted its inaugural team penning event.

Twenty-nine teams took part in the event at the Delegate Showground, 11 of which were in the junior and sub-junior categories.

Team penning involves a team of three riders attempting to cut out three specific head of cattle from a mob of 30 and gathering them up into a pen at the opposite end of the arena within a time limit.

Winning the junior event was the team of Zac Lucus, Emily Lucus and Ben Hughes, with Emily also claiming the best junior horse and rider award for the day.

Emily also performed well in the open section, teaming up with Darren Lucus and John Sutton to peg the fastest time of 26.37 seconds.

The winning team in the opens was Tanya O’Ryan, James O’Ryan and Katie Cottrell.

Following them were Nat Warren, Brendon Warren and Emma Lennon in second; third were Phill Troull, Jean Phillips and Robyn Garting; fourth John Woodward, Jane Woodward and Lauren Woodward; and fifth Susan Bassett, Jayne Hammond and Carol Faithfull.

Best horse and rider in the open section was Kerry Girvan.

Following Zac, Emily and Ben home in the juniors were Breanna Bassett, Lochie Bassett and Lily Elton in second; Jack Miners, Tara Miners and Jane Miners in third; fourth Will Parker, Lochie Bassett and Breanna Bassett; and fifth Montanna Chamberlain, Bridie Hampshire and Saffron Fox.

Gemma Boreham, Felicity Boreham and Emma Stove posted the fastest junior time of 45 seconds.

Organisers said the weekend was a huge success and thanked everyone involved including valued sponsors, cattle donors and judge Brett Rogers.

Sponsors included Talbot Transport (Johnny, Snake & Jack); Sharp & Fullgrabe; Landmark; Danny & Lana Jamieson; Glenmia Suppliers; Gordon Litchfield Wool; South East Rural; and Delegate Café.

They also thanked Max and Gail Smallman and their band of helpers for organising dinner on Friday and running the canteen on Saturday.

The Delegate Team Penning event came hot on the heels of Dalgety’s on September 23.

The sun-drenched day involved 120 open riders, 24 juniors and 12 sub-juniors from near and far.
