Health promotion officer, with Grand Pacific Health, Kate Greenwood has run successful LiFE ‘Preventing Falls’ programs in Jindabyne, Bombala, Berridale and Nimmitabel over the past year and is now looking forward to delivering the program in Delegate as well as a second program in Bombala.
“One in three people aged over 65 fall over at least once per year and falls put more senior in hospital than any other, cause, so there is a real need for programs like this,” she said.
“What makes LiFE different from other programs is that people do not have to set aside special exercise time each day, something that many of us find difficult to do.
“Instead, LiFE activities are done throughout the day, such as when washing dishes, hanging out washing or cleaning our teeth,” she said.
Therefore if you are over 60 years old and are concerned about your balance, or if you have tripped or fallen in the past year and are worried about falling, this free program might be for you.
Perhaps you are finding it harder to get out of a chair than you used to?
The free program teaches you to incorporate some simple leg strengthening and balance activities into your daily tasks and routines.
These activities have been shown to reduce the risk of falling.
The program runs for 1 hour each week for 5 weeks and each participant also has an individual appointment for a one on one assessment at the start and finish of the program.
The program is starting in Bombala at 10.30am and Delegate at 1pm on Monday’s starting April 16.
The free seven week falls prevention exercise program will be held at the Bombala Community Centre and the Delegate School of Arts Hall.
Eligible people will be aged 60+, living at home, able to walk independently (with or without a walking aid) and not diagnosed with dementia
A doctor’s referral is not required.
There will also be a ‘Falls Program’ starting in Adaminaby on Tuesday, April 17 between 11am and 12noon.
